Abstract
Acute rhabdomyolysis induced by primary varicella infection is a very unusual condition that has rarely been reported in the literature. We reported a 6-year old boy of acute rhabdomyolysis due to varicella infection. He had previously been in good healthy. He presented to the emergency room with both leg pain, muscle swelling, tachypnea, renal failure, and confused mentality following the onset of varicella lesions 7 days earlier. Electrodiagnostic study revealed myopathic findings, and serum myoglobin was elevated more than 100,000 ng/mL. Under impression of rhabdomyolysis with acute renal failure, he was managed conservatively with continuous renal replacement, hydration and rehabilitation and then his symptoms have improved.
